About
Ash Wednesday is February 22nd, following Mardi Gras on Tuesday, February 21st. Ash Wednesday is the first day of lent, falling 46 days before Easter. Read more about Ash Wednesday in the Methodist Church.
Lent is the 40 day period of preparation before Easter. It is a penitential season marked by prayer, fasting
and abstinence, and almsgiving. The ashes are typically made by burning the palms that were distributed the previous year on Palm Sunday.
During this time, many Christians choose to fast or abstain from various foods. For 2012, many UMC members are uniting in a fast from alcohol. Make your pledge here.
