THE KESSLER SCHOOL (pre-k – grade 4) The Kessler School believes that every child is special, and gifted in his or her own way. The school’s goal is to help children not only develop their own gifts, but to learn from and appreciate the talents of others. Teachers and curriculum for the school invite a "whole child" approach to learning that uses a combination of education strategies to promote intellectual, emotional, physical and social growth. The goal of The Kessler School is to provide students from our community and throughout the city with the finest possible education of both the mind and the spirit and to combine strong intellectual discipline with care and compassion. PARENTS DAY OUT (ages 6 months – 2 years) The mission of Kessler Park United Methodist Church’s Parents Day Out program is to provide an environment for preschool children, ages 6 months to 2 years, in which they may learn to relate to one another and experience growth in a Christian community. It exists for the purpose of allowing busy parents to have time for other activities while a nurturing staff cares for their children. Girl Scouts: Kessler Park UMC is proud to offer scouting opportunities for young girls. For the past 8 years our programs have really grown. We currently have scouts for those in Kindergarden through 9th Grade. For information about Girl Scouts contact Sara Kitto at 214.948.3844 or Lafwithus@juno.com. Boy Scout Troop 5 is an essential element in Kessler Park UMC's ministry to the community. It provides an outlet for young men to learn leadership through service to God and country, and to grow mentally aware and physically strong. With the guidance of our Adult Leaders, the Scouts of Troop 5 learn by doing. Troop 5 is a Scout-led troop. A strong camping program teaches Scouting skills, to show the Scouts they can rely on themselves and others to overcome obstacles. Camping in all conditions and all seasons not only builds self-confidence, it turns a group of boys into a smooth-running Troop that can accomplish much. Troop 5 is strongly committed to serving the community. The Troop collects and sells mistletoe in December to benefit a local service agency and prepare dinner at an AIDS hospice on a regular basis. Troop 5 also participates in Work Weekends at Kessler Park UMC and provides color guards for various civic functions. Each Scout must have a minimum level of service hours for every advancement in rank. Troop 5 is committed to an environment of respect and tolerance for all persons, and welcomes persons of all kinds from all backgrounds. Any boy between 11 and 18 is welcome to join Troop 5, regardless of prior Scout experience. Membership in Kessler Park UMC is not required. The Troop has a policy that no Scout will be prohibited from participating in Scouting activities due to a lack of family funds. "Camperships" provided by the congregation are available for summer camp, and other options are open to Scouts whose parents cannot afford equipment or uniforms. Parental involvement is required for membership in Troop 5. Scouting is a family affair, not baby sitting. Parents are expected when possible to camp out with the troop, help with transportation, serve on the Troop Committee, teach Merit Badge courses, help support our service projects, or otherwise share their time and talents with the Scouts. We always need Patrol Advisors and other Adult Leaders.
Our main focus is Outdoors-High-Adventure with emphasis on teaching our young men and young women how to acquire a high level of proficiency in their outdoor skills in order to earn the Ranger Award, Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards. Another main goal of our program is to help former/present boy scouts achieve the rank of Eagle Scouts. We also teach all of our members to sail on our 25' Catalina sailboat at Lake Texoma. All of our members are encouraged to become Red Cross certified in First Aid and CPR, certified Lifeguards, and to acquire a high level of competency in Rock climbing, Mountaineering, Camping, Hiking, Canoeing, Sailing and much more. Parental involvement is also required for membership in Venturing
